Shikoku Island - Japan

Shikoku is the smallest (225 km long and between 50 and 150 km wide) and least populous (4,141,955 as of 2005) of the four main islands of Japan, located south of Honshū and east of the island of Kyūshū. Its ancient names include Iyo-no-futana-shima (伊予之二名島), Iyo-shima (伊予島), and Futana-shima (二名島). The current name refers to the four former provinces which made up the island: Awa, Tosa, Sanuki, and Iyo.Geography The Shikoku region, comprising Shikoku and its surrounding islets, covers about 18,800 square kilometres (7,259 sq mi) and consists of four prefectures: Ehime, Kagawa, Kōchi, and Tokushima. Across the Inland Sea lie Wakayama, Osaka, Hyōgo, Okayama, Hiroshima, and Yamaguchi Prefectures on Honshū. To the west lie Ōita and Miyazaki Prefectures on Kyūshū. The 50th largest island by area in the world, Shikoku is smaller than Sardinia and Bananal, but larger than Halmahera and Seram. By population, it ranks 23rd, having fewer inhabitants than Sicily or Singapore, but more than Puerto Rico or Negros. Mountains running east and west divide Shikoku into a narrow northern subregion, fronting on the Inland Sea, and a southern part facing the Pacific Ocean. Most of the 4.5 million inhabitants live in the north, and all but one of the island's few larger cites are located there. Mount Ishizuchi (石鎚山) in Ehime at 1,982 m (6,503 ft) is the highest mountain on the island. Industry is moderately well developed and includes the processing of ores from the important Besshi copper mine. Land is used intensively. Wide alluvial areas, especially in the eastern part of the zone, are planted with rice and subsequently are double cropped with winter wheat and barley. Fruit is grown throughout the northern area in great variety, including citrus fruits, persimmons, peaches, and grapes. Because of wheat production Sanuki udon (讃岐うどん) became an important part of the diet in Kagawa Prefecture (former Sanuki Province) in the Edo period. Shikoku in relation to the Inland Sea and Honshū. The larger southern area of Shikoku is mountainous and sparsely populated. The only significant lowland is a small alluvial plain at Kōchi, the prefectural capital. The area's mild winters stimulated some truck farming, specializing in growing out-of-season vegetables under plastic covering. Two crops of rice can be cultivated annually in the southern area. The pulp and paper industry took advantage of the abundant forests and hydroelectric power. The major river in Shikoku is the Yoshino River. It runs 196 km from its source close to Mount Ishizuchi, flowing basically west to east across the northern boundaries of Kōchi and Tokushima Prefectures, reaching the sea at the city of Tokushima. The Yoshino is famous for Japan's best white-water rafting, with trips going along the Oboke Koboke sections of the river. Shikoku has four important capes. Gamōda in Anan, Tokushima is the easternmost point on the island, and Sada in Ikata, Ehime the westernmost. Muroto in Muroto, Kochi and Ashizuri, the southern extreme of Shikoku, in Tosashimizu, Kochi, jut into the Pacific Ocean. The island's northernmost point is in Takamatsu, Kagawa. Unlike the other three major islands of Japan, Shikoku has no volcanoes. [1] [edit] Transportation

Plastics and oceans don’t go together.

Plastic is wonderful material. It has so many uses, infinitely malleable to fit almost any need. And soooo durable. Plastics last hundreds, even thousands of years.

A Minute of Your Time: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Delimart giant 7-11 is proud to unveil the newest addition to its menu: the individually plastic wrapped banana. Thing is, bananas already come in their own packaging, and all that extra plastic generally just goes in the garbage, and from there, much of it winds up in the ocean, where it joins the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Think an eighth continent...of plastic.

Boat made of plastic bottles crosses Pacific

A boat made out of 12,500 recycled plastic bottles has sailed into Sydney Harbour, four months after it set out from San Francisco.
The Plastiki's journey across the Pacific Ocean was meant to raise awareness about the perils of plastic waste.
The crew of the 60-foot catamaran that weathered fierce ocean storms during its 8,000 nautical miles at sea, left San Francisco on March 20, stopping along the way at various South Pacific island nations including Kiribati and Samoa.
The boat, skippered by environmentalist David de Rothschild, a descendant of the well-known British banking family, was being towed to the Australian National Maritime Museum for a welcome ceremony.
"We hope that Sydneysiders will turn out in force to help us celebrate," de Rothschild said in a statement.
The six-member crew lived in a cabin of just 20 feet by 15 feet, took saltwater showers, and survived on a diet of dehydrated and canned food, supplemented with the occasional vegetable from their small on-board garden.
The boat is fully recyclable, and is powered in part by solar panels and windmills.
The Plastiki's name is a play on the 1947 Kon-Tiki raft sailed across the Pacific by explorer Thor Heyerdahl.
The crew briefly stopped in Queensland state last week, after battling a brutal storm off the Australian coast.
De Rothschild said the idea for the journey came to him after he read a United Nations report that said pollution and particularly plastic waste was seriously threatening the world's oceans.

[ALEV-FULL] Plastics & our Oceans

ALDE ADLE Seminar (Full Video Event): Plastics & our Oceans - A threat to the Marine Environment
Event date: 22/06/10 13:00 to 15:30
Location: BE BRUSSELS P4B001
Plastic can be seen floating on all the world's oceans. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch may contain as much as 100 million tons of plastic debris, and could represent up to 8% of the size of the Pacific Ocean. Plastic garbage is an increasing problem in the North East Atlantic as well. Plastic eventually enters the food chain as animals confuse debris with food, which may cause serious health problems.
This seminar aims to highlight the increasing concern of plastic garbage originating from land-based sources as well as maritime sources. An exchange of views with Parliament, Commission and stakeholders will help shape recommendations for potential actions to take at an EU level.

David de Rothschild to Cross the Pacific... on Plastic

HP is equipping environmentalist and adventurer David de Rothschild with the technology needed to sail 10,000 miles across the Pacific on a boat made entirely of plastic bottles. (disclosure: HP is a paying sponsor of AlwaysOn) The Pacific Ocean is home to the world’s biggest trash dump, and a large portion of that is plastic. In an attempt to raise awareness of the oceanic mess, David de Rothschild, founder of Adventure Ecology, is readying a sea voyage from San Francisco to Sydney, Australia, aboard the Plastiki, a boat made entirely of plastic bottles. Rothschild says discoveries like that of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch inspired the expedition. “I was like, hang on a second. This can’t be true,” he said in a recent interview. “Why doesn’t everybody know about this? Why don’t we know about the fact that our oceans are basically filling up with trash?” By turning the symbol of waste into an adventure, Rothschild hopes to inspire young people to develop smart solutions to environmental problems. Plastiki, built from 13,000 recycled softdrink bottles, is intended to showcase how innovative technology can be used to turn waste into a resource. The technology needed to complete the voyage is coming, appropriately, from Silicon Valley’s firstborn, HP*. The tech bellweather will equip the Plastiki crew with the material to capture and share data gathered on the voyage. HP materials include notebooks with magnesium-alloy casing and battery-efficient designs, HP smartphones, and media drives from which pictures and videos of the expedition will be uploaded to the Plastiki website. HP is also helping to build Plastiki Mission Control, an interactive activity and educational center located at Pier 45 in San Francisco, CA. The center will feature 10 interactive, energy-efficient HP TouchSmart IQ816 PCs to display blueprints and sketches, expedition equipment, maps, and films explaining the technology behind the Plastiki Expedition. Satjiv Chahil, senior vice president of global marketing at HP, told ...
